6th Grade enrichment students are learning about the scientific process. They just completed designing boats – these boats had to hold the most weight without sinking. We had some great discussions about density and buoyancy while we were designing out boats.
Now, students have been asked to design a paper airplane. It sounds easy, but students will need to use their research to make the best design possible.
During this school year, 5th grade students have been preparing to read Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse. They started by learning about the time period of the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. As they read, they are learning about plot development, as well as identifying tone in text.
Fourth grade students are developing their writing skills. Right now, they are working on writing an informational essay. One key skill is creating an outline. We have spent several days on developing and organizing our thoughts in an outline.
Now, we are going to learn to make better topic sentences.
During the 2016-2017 school year, third grade students are reading Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret. This is an excellent story, and lots of fun to read because it is a graphic novel.
While reading the story, students will also spend time developing comprehension skills, including questioning, understanding figurative language, and how characters develop.
